Research [top]

Jan 04: Elected to a four-year term as a Director-at-Large of the ICMA. Responsibilities include assisting with the operations of the organization and collaborating with other board members to define and implement its future goals. Also appointed to continue in the role of Publications Coordinator.

Jan 02: Appointed for a two-year term as Publications Coordinator of the ICMA. Responsibilities include supervising ICMA Web resources, and co-editing an annual issue of Organised Sound.

Sep 01: Presented my continuing work on the TeleMusic projects at ICMC01 in Havana, Cuba.

Jun 01: Collaborator on TeleMusic #2. Further development of software supporting the experimental work of Randall Packer, sampling real-time network activity and translating it into control data for musical composition, in essence auralizing a segment of the Internet. Presented as a paper at Music Without Walls? in Leicester, UK, and published in Organised Sound.

Mar 01: Fault Tolerance. Developed a theoretical framework and preliminary implementation applying concepts of fault tolerance to interactive music, with an objective of minimizing the impact of technical difficulties on computer music performance. Presented as a paper at SEAMUS 2001 in Baton Rouge, LA, and published in Journal SEAMUS.

Jan 01: Networked Media Advisor: Intermedia Workshop course co-sponsored by the Maryland Institute, College of Art (MICA) and the Peabody Conservatory Department of Computer Music. Tasked with developing the necessary technological infrastructure, and offering related guidance to students, in support of network-oriented experimental audiovisual art. Projects included physical installation works, live interactive performances, virtual environments, and combinations thereof.

Nov 00: Collaborator on TeleMusic #1. Developed a software system to connect a public Web site with a musical composition written in MAX by Randall Packer and a visual environment designed by Steve Bradley. This integration allowed full participation via the Internet with a live multimedia performance at the Sonic Circuits Festival VIII in St. Paul, MN on 11/3/2000.

Oct 99: NetMIDI Phase One. As part of a project to enable piano master classes over the Internet, developed software to flawlessly transmit MIDI data over any IP-based network. Presented as a poster at ICMC99 in Beijing, China, and published in the conference proceedings.

Aug 05: Wrote full music score to 9-minute documentary Behold, A Whirlwind Came: The Science of Tracking Hurricanes. The film was produced by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for the TerraLink exhibit at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore. The film received a Crystal Award of Excellence in the Communicator Awards 2005 Video Competition. [www]

Mar 04: Collaborated with other members of Jomenico (Margaret Schedel, Nick Collins) on Iteration 31, an homage and remix of Alvin Lucier’s I Am Sitting in a Room. Chosen “Best Remix of an Avant-Garde Classic” at SEAMUS 2004 in San Diego, CA. Also selected by vote of attendees for inclusion on Music from SEAMUS - Volume 14 CD.

Jun 03: Wrote full music score to 9-minute documentary Earth Observation 2020 produced by NASA’s Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) Project at GSFC.

May 03: Ars Algorhythmica, for didjeridu and live electronics, accepted for performance at New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME) 2003 in Montreal, Quebec.

Nov 02: Wrote full music score to 10-minute video commissioned for the opening keynote address at the SuperComputing 2002 conference in Baltimore, MD. Chosen by Apple Computer for inclusion on their Final Cut Pro demonstration reel. [www]

Apr 02: Ars Didjita, for didjeridu and prerecorded accompaniment, accepted for performance at SEAMUS 2002 in Iowa City, IA, as the opening piece of the conference.

Oct 00: Wrote full music score to 18-minute documentary Journeys Through Earth and Space produced by NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio (SVS) at the Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) for the High Performance Computing and Communications (HPCC) Program. The film was subsequently presented at SuperComputing 2001, and received a Crystal Award of Distinction in the Communicator Awards 2001 Video Competition. [www]

Mar 98: Wrote music to the educational film The Cutting Edge – about the ethics and science of genetics – produced by NOVA Research Company in support of NIH SBIR Grant No. 1 R43 RR12445-01.

Oct 97: Wrote music to four of nine segments in the documentary Images of Earth and Space: SC97 Edition produced by NASA's Scientific Visualization Studio at the Goddard Space Flight Center for the Earth and Space Sciences Project. The documentary won an award of "Excellence" in the Society for Technical Communication's 1997-98 International Technical Video Competition. [www]

System Administration [top]

1995 - Present: As Director of Computer Systems and Technology, set up and maintains a corporate local area network at the headquarters of NOVA Research Company. The network is a switched Gigabit Ethernet fabric with 100Base-T Ethernet running to each desktop. There are approximately 25 Windows client workstations and 25 Macintosh client workstations communicating via the TCP/IP protocol with various servers. These servers provide file-and-print services, remote access services, e-mail services, virtual private networking, and wide area connectivity including firewalled Internet access and Web publishing services over a dedicated T1 link. Among the operating systems and applications deployed on the servers are Microsoft Windows 2000 Server, Mac OS X, Novell Netware, Linux, Apache, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Microsoft Internet Information Server. Promoted to Vice President of Arts and Technology in 2001.
